About the archives
Jewish Detroit’s History in the Making
The Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives was established in 1991 to collect, preserve and make available the historical records of Federation, its member agencies, local Jewish communal organizations, synagogues and the personal and family papers of Detroit’s Jewry.
Its vast collection tells the story of Jewish Detroit through documents, photographs, oral history interviews, audiovisual materials, a cemetery index and more.
Open The Archives
The Archives capture the living history of Jewish Detroit—its leaders, landmarks and everyday moments that define who we are. Dive in. You never know what (or who!) you’ll find.

Visit the Jampel Center page to find their combined database of digital collections and finding aids, as well as other resources to immerse you in the history of the local Jewish community and assist you in preserving your own family archives.
Oral History
Archives
The oral history collection of the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives seeks to tell the history of Jewish Detroit through the recollections of those who lived it. Its stories span from community leaders to Jewish professionals to immigrants who made Detroit their home, and more.
